Dental insurance and direct billing

We check your coverage before treatment and send the claim to your insurer, so you pay only your portion on the day.

Lilac Family Dentistry in North York bills dental insurance companies directly. Bring your plan details and we'll check your coverage before treatment, send a predetermination for larger work when needed, and tell you what you'll pay. Our fees follow the Ontario Dental Association suggested fee guide, and we also accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan.

How direct billing works

  1. We check your coverageShare your insurer, policy and certificate numbers when you book. We confirm what your plan covers.
  2. We send the claimAfter your visit, we send the claim to your insurer electronically.
  3. You pay your portionYou pay only what your plan doesn't cover, such as a co-payment or anything over your plan's limits.

Patients often tell us our front desk makes insurance easy. Jennifer at our front desk works with insurance companies every day and is happy to answer questions.

Government programs

  • Accepted: the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) and the Interim Federal Health Program (IFHP) for refugees.
  • Not accepted: Healthy Smiles Ontario, Ontario Works and ODSP dental coverage.

What to bring

  • Your insurance company's name
  • Your policy (group) number and certificate (ID) number
  • The plan member's name and date of birth, if you're covered through a spouse or parent
  • Details of any second plan

Insurance terms, explained

  • Predetermination: an estimate we send your insurer before larger treatment, such as a crown, so you know what's covered first.
  • Co-payment: the percentage of a fee your plan expects you to pay, for example 20% of a filling.
  • Annual maximum: the most your plan will pay in a benefit year.
  • Frequency limits: how often a service is covered, for example one cleaning every six or nine months.
  • Fee guide: the Ontario Dental Association suggested fee guide that our fees follow and that many plans use to set what they pay.

Covered by two plans?

If you're covered by two plans, for example your own and a spouse's, we can coordinate benefits so both plans contribute. Bring the details of both.

No insurance? You can still see us. See payment options or check whether you qualify for the Canadian Dental Care Plan.
