Children's Dentistry
We Love Working With Kids!
At Lilac Family Dentistry, our family dentist Dr. Maralani and her team love working with kids. Bringing your child at a young age to the dentist will help to set them up for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums.
Canadian Dental Association recommends that the first dental visit should be just after your child’s first birthday and then maintained every 6 months to check on the developing teeth. The first dental visit is usually short and involves no treatment. It’s an opportunity for us to meet you and your child and help them get comfortable in a dental office environment. We will gently examine your child’s teeth and gums to make sure there are no problems. Dr. Maralani will provide parents and caregivers on child nutrition, and general home care techniques that can help prevent future problems. At the end of the visit, your child will be able to pick a toy from our toy treasure box.
If your child is older then X-rays may be taken to reveal hidden tooth decay and check on the progress of your child’s permanent teeth under the gums. We may clean your child’s teeth and apply topical fluoride (over age 6) to help protect the teeth against decay.
Children’s Dentistry and Preventive Care
Tooth decay and children no longer have to go hand in hand. At Lilac Family Dentistry, we are most concerned with all aspects of preventive care. We recommend the use of dental sealants to protect your child’s teeth. Dental sealants are space-age plastics that are bonded to the chewing surfaces of decay-prone back teeth. This is just one of the ways we will set the foundation for your child’s lifetime of good oral health.
Tips for Cavity Prevention:
- Limit frequency of meals and snacks.
- Encourage brushing, flossing and rinsing.
- Watch what your child drinks.
- Don’t put a child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice
- Avoid giving your child sticky foods.
- Make treats part of meals.
- Choose nutritious snacks.
