Bruxism And Mouthguards: All The Information You Need

Are you waking up with a headache or sore, achy jaw? If so, it’s probably time to talk to your family dentist in North York about bruxism.

What Is Bruxism?

Bruxism is the technical name for tooth grinding or clenching. Grinding and clenching can happen during the day, especially during stressful situations, but it is most common at night while you’re sleeping.

Bruxism is a common but serious condition that can cause many problems including aching pain in your jaw, neck and head, and damage to your teeth. Patients who suffer from bruxism often visit their general dentist with aches and pains, chipped teeth, and Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (more commonly known as TMJ).

While bruxism is painful and damaging, it’s also very difficult to stop on your own as it’s usually happening while you sleep or are focused on a stressful situation. Patients with bruxism need professional interventions to prevent the serious damage that can occur from years of grinding.

How Is Bruxism Treated?

If you’re concerned about bruxism, visit your dentist near you to have an assessment. The team at Lilac Family Dentistry will examine your teeth, gums, and the muscles in your mouth to determine whether you are clenching or grinding unconsciously.

If you are diagnosed with bruxism, your dentist will most likely recommend a mouthguard. Mouthguards are protective devices that you wear while you sleep that create a protective barrier between the teeth to make clenching and grinding impossible. There are many types of nightguards to choose from – they can be hard or soft, custom-made, or purchased at a pharmacy, fitted to the top or bottom teeth.

Store-bought mouthguards are better than nothing, but it is highly recommended that you request a custom-fit mouthguard made by your dentist at team. Since these mouthguards are made using a mold of your teeth, they will fit your mouth perfectly, making them far more comfortable and easier to tolerate than a generic store-bought options.

Since discomfort is the most common reason that patients neglect to wear their mouthguards, it’s important to go with the most comfortable option possible. It does take some time to get used to the feeling of sleeping with a mouthguard, but most patients report adapting to them within six weeks.
